DOPE. | @MOCAlosangeles “The Colby Poster Printing Company” (Documentary)

Culture., Design., DOPE., Interviews., Lifestyle.
Until its doors closed on December 31, 2012, the family-run Colby Poster Printing Company made the letter-pressed signs, posters, billboards and showcards that were a ubiquitous feature of the visual landscape of Los Angeles. For three generations, promoters of boxing bouts, rodeos, reggae concerts and literary-minded visual artists were drawn to the swift graphic science of the day-glo poster, its essential purpose to quickly and efficiently convey information to viewers zooming along the autoscape, and to the durability of the product, hanging on telephone poles and chainlink fences from Venice to Las Vegas for months and years after the commission. In this short documentary, C.R. Stecyk III visits the company to make one last print, and to expound on its enduring appeal to anyone who ever wanted to leave a mark of their own in the city of signs.

There’s a huge viral video going around of an epic dance-off between an adorable kid and a very rhythmically-gifted usher at a recent Detroit Pistons game. This got Jimmy wondering why we don’t have audience members or security guards who can dance like that. Luckily, we just happen to have a couple of guests in our audience to show them how it’s done.

Song: “Take Me To A Place” –…

Our video’s message: We are in no way saying that this is the finish line for Jim. This is just the first corner turned. We’d be crazy to think a makeover video would undo the internal damage of decades of poverty and alcoholism. Progress is rarely a straight line forward, especially when it comes to addiction. But it could be the start of something, and we’re working hard to help walk him down this new path. For everyone else, we hope to give a hesitation to those that we tune out, a reminder of the potential that even our most down and out citizens will always carry with them.

Information about Degage Ministries: Serving 400-500 individuals daily, Dégagé Ministries offers help and hope to homeless and disadvantaged individuals in our community. Responsive programming is designed to address immediate and long-term needs such as overnight respite for women in crisis, food, referral services and hygiene facilities. While many of our services may seem “simple,” those who receive our services take nothing for granted. Often, it is the simplest of gestures that brings the most powerful results.

Everyone goes through unfavorable situations in their lifetime and I think the most important thing about dealing with tough times is how you rise above it. Regardless of what or who is involved, I feel like YOU ultimately decide the status of your mood. Obviously and inevitably, people are going to be weighed down with bad days, but this video represents the active choice to be happy. Not so much literal concept wise, (I highly doubt that anyone takes mattress buying this serious haha) but the layout of the video as a whole. The heart of it, the choreography, is heavy and troubled, but wrapped in sketch comedy to show that you have the power of changing the way you view any given scenario by taking something unpleasant and looking at it in a different way.

“Life is 10 percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.”
