Here is part one of HHS1987′s exclusive with esteemed DJ & studio engineer Young Guru at the Heineken Green Room event at Tango in Philadelphia. Guru sat down with our very own E-Money in front of a packed house and spoke for over an hour on his career and experiences as the sound technician behind one of Hip-Hop’s most historic record labels.

Guru detailed his start as a DJ in Delaware, how connecting relationships in college prompted an early partnership with with Sean “Puffy” Combs and Bad Boy Records, moving to New York as a young father, as well as how forging a friendship with Memphis Bleek that led to a prominent position at Rocafella Records in it’s rise to prominence.

Guru also touched on his desire to teach up and coming engineers, engineering the session for Hov’s legendary diss “Takeover”, and how Just Blaze and Freeway’s synergy led to the first State Property LP

For the final episode on our great American journey we flew to a city founded on big ideas and bigger ambitions, a city where just as many dreams are made as wither and die: Los Angeles. Tackling the LA scene was no easy task. In fact it’s almost impossible to truly traverse the city’s disparate musical history, but with a killer set of artists we’ve pieced together how certain genres evolved and thrived in Tinseltown’s divisive ground.

We met up with Warren G in Long Beach on the corner of 21st and Lewis—the scene of the “Regulate” video no less—Egyptian Lover demonstrated his 808 prowess, and joined Warpaint at home. Plus we spoke with Ariel Pink, Trash Talk, Sam Spiegel (NASA/Squeak E. Clean), Jennifer Heremma from Royal Trux/Black Bananas, and shot the shit with French transplant Soko. Phew!

Design Culture. | @RDBURNNER “What All Great Design Companies Know” (Lecture)

We emulate the design acumen of companies like Apple and BMW, but what are the processes and mindsets that make them tick? In this 99U talk, designer Robert Brunner deconstructs his creative process revealing the stories behind products like Beats by Dre headphones and the Polaroid Cube.
First, he says, recognize that a brand belongs to your customers. “You don’t own your brand. A brand isn’t a logo or packaging,” he says. “It’s a gut feeling. And when two people have the same gut feeling, you have a brand.” Secondly, most people view design as a part of the production chain, you get requirements in and out comes a product. But design is the chain, and for the best products it permeates every step. “It should be a topic of conversation constantly,” he says. “Thats how you make great stuff.”
About Rober Brunner
Robert Brunner founded San Francisco-based design studio Ammunition in 2007 to communicate ideas through products, brands, and their surrounding experiences. His work as an industrial designer has spawned numerous brand-defining designs over the past three decades. Prior to founding Ammunition, Robert was a partner at Pentagram and led strategic brand consulting and industrial design programs for Fortune 500 companies. Previously, he was the Director of Industrial Design for Apple, where he established its pioneering internal corporate design organization, Apple IDg. Before joining Apple, Robert co-founded design consultancy Lunar.
Named one of Fast Company’s “Most Creative People in Business,” Robert’s work is included in the permanent design collections of the MoMA in both New York and San Francisco. He is the co-author of the book Do You Matter? How Great Design Will Make People Love Your Company.

Whether it’s due to exclusive communities in your industry or a slavish devotion to page views, tweets, and awards, it’s easy to get caught up in pleasing others. Entrepreneur, media mogul, and designer Marc Eckō tell us that, if we’re not careful, we can let others label us and define our career, robbing us of our natural potential. The solution? Stand up for yourself. What the gatekeepers may cite as a reason for your exclusion may very well lead to your success.
“Wealth that matters cannot be counted,” says Eckō. In this presentation, Eckō shares three strategies for taking control of your creative career, one gatekeeper at a time.
About Marc Ecko
Once a graffiti artist with no connections or fashion pedigree, Marc Eckō left the safety net of pharmacy school to start his own company. Armed only with hustle, sweat equity, and creativity, he flipped a $5,000 bag of cash into a global corporation now worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Eckō is an American fashion designer, entrepreneur, investor and artist. He is the founder of Marc Eckō Enterprises, a global fashion and lifestyle company. He is also the founder and chairman of Complex Media, the world’s leading provider of fashion, entertainment, lifestyle, and product trends to young male tastemakers. Complex Media Network includes 110+ websites that generate more than 700 million page views and 70 million unique visitors per month. Eckō serves as an emeritus board member to the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Big Picture Learning, Tikva Children’s Home & Everloop. Marc lives in NJ with his wife and three kids.

Design Culture. | @SwissMiss “#5RulesforMakinganImpact” (Lecture) vimeo.com/99242101

Tina Roth Eisenberg was chugging along in her career as a designer… and then her daughter was born. She realized she had not yet become the kind of woman she had hoped her children would know. She immediately delved into a career as a serial entrepreneur that now includes an impressive group of “labors of love.” In this talk she shares five rules that have helped her launch businesses like Creative Mornings, Tattly, and Studiomates, among others.
Each was a side project that stemmed from a personal frustration. “I have a rule: If I keep complaining about something, I either do something about it or let it go,” says Eisenberg. The result: a group of projects that reflect the values dear to Eisenberg, most importantly using business to positively impact the lives of others.
Whether it’s through having a confetti drawer, keeping sane hours, or building environments that cultivate enthusiasm, Eisenberg urges us all to judge our success with the happiness and personal growth of those around us. “While I really love my work, my work is not me,” she says.
About Tina Roth Eisenberg
Tina Roth Eisenberg, a Swiss born and raised graphic designer, runs four “side-projects gone businesses” out of DUMBO, Brooklyn; a collaborative co-working space called Studiomates, a global, monthly lecture series called CreativeMornings, TeuxDeux the simple to-do app and Tattly, a design-y temporary tattoo shop. Tina is often referred to as Swissmiss after her popular design blog which is also the name of her Twitter handle.
